A cross-disciplinary initiative convened by the World Maritime University (WMU) with contributions from GDFA

This report captures the outcomes of an international roundtable held in Malmö, Sweden, exploring how the global shipping industry can align with planetary boundaries while advancing toward net-zero emissions by 2050. Convening experts from academia, industry, policy, and civil society—including the IMO and GDFA—the dialogue examined the intertwined challenges of biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution.

Participants identified ecosystem-based approaches as essential to integrating biodiversity and climate objectives into maritime operations and governance. The report outlines key opportunities for action, including applying real-time environmental data, adopting new area-based management tools, and developing ecosystem-based “green corridors.”

GDFA’s participation supports efforts to link ocean impact data with the transition toward sustainable shipping, aligning finance, regulation, and technology for planetary health.
